Colombia Vive volunteers traveled from Boston to Washington, DC to participate in the July 11 rally against the Colombia-US Free Trade Agreement.

  • July 15, 2011 - 12:45pm

    Amig@s/Friends,

Thank you for your support. Colombia Vive volunteers went down to D.C. at the beginning of the week for the rally to oppose the FTAs.

There were symbolic acts: a procession with mock coffins (in remembrance of the 51 slain union leaders), which were placed in front of the White House, there were chants to say "No to the FTA", singing and rhythm in support of the victims and those arrested in acts of civil disobedience.

Here is the video from Telesur in Spanish and a video in English.

Much of the discussion of the proposed US-Colombia US Free Trade Agreement has centered on the murder of unionists and the loss of jobs in the United States due to outsourcing, both very important considerations. As is well known, Colombia is the most dangerous place in the world to engage in union activities and the murder of union leaders and activists goes almost entirely unpunished. The standard of living in the United States is reduced as well-paying jobs are eliminated and production is exported to low-wage countries including our neighbors Mexico, Central America, and Colombia.

  • June 2, 2011 - 6:46pm

    1) Just as the North American Free Trade Agreement in Mexico, the Central American Free Trade Agreement in Central America, and the Caribbean Basin Partnership Act in Haiti, the proposed Free Trade Agreement with Colombia will severely damage the agricultural sector in that country. If enacted, the agreement will further cripple the ability of small farmers in Colombia to compete with heavily subsidized farm products from the United States, such as corn, rice, beans and potatoes, traditionally produced by Colombians in their own country.

From October 9–16, 2010, Colombia Vive presents a series of talks in the Boston area by two courageous Colombian women.

A single mother, Flor Hilda Hernandez lost her oldest son, Elkin Gustavo, in 2008 when he and 16 others from his neighborhood of Bogotá joined a countless number of falsos positivos, innocent young men kidnapped and murdered by Colombian soldiers motivated by government promises of bonus pay for each “guerrilla” killed in combat.
